Our Climate Action Plan for 2025

COPLTI is dedicated to making meaningful strides toward sustainability by integrating climate literacy into our programs and adopting environmentally friendly practices. See below to learn about our roadmap for achieving our climate goals in 2025.

Climate Commitment for 2025

At the Central Ohio Parent Leadership Training Institute (COPLTI), we recognize the importance of addressing climate change and equipping our community with the knowledge to act. By 2025, we are committed to achieving two key climate goals:

1. Integrating Climate Literacy into Our Civic Education:

We are dedicated to embedding climate education within our Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) sessions. By integrating climate topics into our civic education curriculum, participants will gain an understanding of how environmental policies intersect with community well-being. Our approach will empower families to become advocates for sustainable practices and informed environmental stewardship, equipping them to engage with policymakers and influence decisions that address climate challenges. This integration ensures that climate awareness becomes an essential part of our training, preparing parents and children to drive change within their communities.

2. Transitioning to Paper-Free Programming

To reduce our environmental footprint, COPLTI is dedicated to eliminating paper use in our course materials. By embracing digital resources and technology, we can deliver effective, engaging, and eco-friendly educational experiences. This transition supports our broader mission to promote sustainability while enhancing accessibility for all our program participants.

Why Our Plan Matters for Climate Justice

Our commitment to these goals reflects our belief that small actions can lead to significant change. We are excited to take this journey toward a more sustainable future and invite our community to join us in learning to advocate for climate justice throughout our communities.

Reducing Deforestation

Forests play a critical role in absorbing carbon dioxide. By reducing paper consumption, we help protect forests and their ability to mitigate climate change.

Decreasing Pollution

The production and disposal of paper and plastic contribute to air and water pollution. Digitalizing our 20-week curriculum, for our English and Spanish Cohorts, our Children’s Leadership Training Institute, and our Senior Leadership classes helps minimize negative environmental impacts.

Lowering Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that reducing paper waste is one of the most effective ways to decrease methane emissions from landfills. By intentionally reducing our paper waste output, we become an example for our community.

Addressing Environmental Inequities

Marginalized communities face greater climate impacts due to factors like poor air quality and extreme weather. COPLTI empowers these parent leaders to advocate for equitable environmental policies by promoting climate literacy.

Equipping Families for Resilience

Climate change hits low-income families hardest. Educating them on resilience and sustainability helps build stronger, more prepared communities that can advocate for fair climate solutions.

Amplifying Diverse Voices

Climate policy often overlooks affected communities. COPLTI’s civic engagement ensures diverse voices are heard, driving equitable solutions that reflect the needs of all residents.

Our 2025 Plan for Climate Justice

At the Central Ohio Parent Leadership Training Institute (COPLTI), we recognize the importance of addressing climate change and equipping our community with the knowledge to act.

Quarter 1: 2025

Digital Transition Kickoff

Objective:
Begin the transition from paper binders to digital resources using our Learning Management System (LMS).

Action Steps:
Upload and organize all class resources, including handouts, reading materials, and guides, onto our LMS platform.
Train staff and facilitators on how to use and manage the LMS, ensuring a seamless experience for participants.

Climate Impact:
Transitioning to digital resources will significantly reduce our paper usage, minimizing deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions associated with paper production. According to the Environmental Paper Network, the production of one ton of paper can generate up to 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide. By going digital, we reduce our carbon footprint and conserve natural resources.

Quarter 2: 2025

Full Implementation

Objective: Complete the transition to digital resources for all classes and pilot the use of the LMS with participants.

Action Steps:
Distribute a guide for participants on how to access and use digital resources.
Evaluate the success of the digital transition and make any necessary adjustments to improve user experience.

Climate Impact:
Eliminating the need for paper binders also reduces the use of plastics and inks, which are petroleum-based products that contribute to pollution and require energy-intensive production. By minimizing waste, we further protect ecosystems and promote sustainable practices.

Quarter 3: 2025

Fundraising for Digital Access

Objective: Launch a fundraising campaign to secure funds for providing Chromebooks, tablets, or e-readers to participants who lack digital access.

Action Steps:
Organize community events and online campaigns to raise awareness and funds.
Collaborate with corporate sponsors and local organizations to secure donations or device sponsorships.

Climate Impact:
Providing participants with digital devices ensures equitable access to education while supporting our mission to go paper-free. Digital resources reduce waste and energy consumption associated with traditional printing and binding.
